COLLAGE glossary of functions

This page is the reference. It names every control on every surface of the COLLAGE window, every parameter a host can automate, every control source a route can read, and the words the other guides use. The parameter and source tables are generated from the plugin’s own schema and registry, so they cannot drift from the build they describe.

If you are new to COLLAGE, start with the Getting Started guide, then work through the Tutorials. For how the pieces fit together, read the Technical Guide.

The surfaces

COLLAGE’s window is five bands. From the top: the head band, the signal corridor, the five station cards, the control apron, and the MOD band. Three surfaces fold out over the corridor when asked: the MORPH · VECTOR panel, the CONTROL ROUTES inspector and the LIBRARY.

The COLLAGE window with its five bands numbered

1 · Head band

Left half of the head band Right half of the head band

#ControlWhat it does
1COLLAGEThe logotype, cut into the head band. A session written by an earlier renderer shows a LEGACY marker beside the preset name.
2Preset consoleThe two chevrons step through the presets on disk. Pressing the name field opens the LIBRARY. A fresh insert reads INIT.
3Undo lensSteps the patch back one move. Shift-click redoes; when only a redo is possible the face turns into the redo arrow.
4INInput trim, ±24 dB, before the rack.
5MIXThe master dry/wet blend, against a latency-matched dry signal.
6HPOutput high-pass, 12 dB per octave, 20 Hz to 2 kHz, or OFF at the bottom of its travel. The frequency shown is the filter’s −6 dB point; the −3 dB corner is 1.55 times higher.
7LPOutput low-pass, 12 dB per octave, 800 Hz to 20 kHz, or OFF at the top of its travel. The frequency shown is the filter’s −6 dB point; the −3 dB corner is at 0.64 times that frequency.
8OUTOutput trim, ±24 dB, before the soft ceiling.
9LOADThe engine’s processing load. The CEIL lamp beside it lights while the soft ceiling is reducing gain.
10LATENCYThe latency the plugin reports to the host, in samples and milliseconds. It changes only with the RESOLUTION tier.
11RATEThe session’s sample rate.
12ROUTESHow many modulation routes the patch carries.

The five knobs sit in signal order: IN feeds the rack; the rack’s output meets MIX, then HP, LP, OUT and the ceiling.

2 · Signal corridor

The signal corridor

#ElementWhat it does
1SIGNAL CORRIDOR · LIVEThe caption. LIVE means telemetry is arriving from the engine; IDLE means nothing has been published yet.
2ROUTESOpens the CONTROL ROUTES inspector over the corridor. A latch: it never disables modulation.
3MORPHOpens the MORPH · VECTOR fold-out over the right-hand column. The latch stays lit while the panel is open.
4INThe input end of the stream.
5Focused paneThe focused station’s transformation drawn from live telemetry: SPECTRAL’s in and out spectra with displacement arcs, GRANULAR’s grain field, MANGLE’s and PLEAT’s transfer curves, TIME’s slice ladder. A powered-off station draws only what its settings determine and offers a POWER button.
6Activity rowsOne line per unfocused station: an activity bar and a one-line readout, or OFF · NOT TOUCHING THE STREAM.
7OUTThe output end of the stream.

The corridor is a display. Selection, power and order are set on the station cards below it.

3 · Station cards

The five station cards

#ElementWhat it does
1Number · sigil · nameThe station’s position in the rack (1 to 5), its letter and its name. The letter and the number carry the identity even without colour.
2PWRPowers the station on or off. Power is a 10 ms fade on a station that keeps running, so it never clicks.
3Wet barShows the station’s WET amount. Set it with the WET knob in the apron.
4Selection outlineThe red outline and a red fade inside the card mark the station the apron is showing, whether its power is on or off.
5Level readoutIN and OUT: the station’s measured input and output level. An output peak above unity is highlighted, so a stage that builds up gain stands out.

Click a card to focus it. Drag a card to reorder the rack. While dragging, a red marker shows where the card will land. With SPLIT on, each card also shows a LANE chip that moves the station between lane A and lane B.

4 · Control apron

Left half of the control apron Right half of the control apron

#ElementWhat it does
1Station blockThe focused station’s name and blurb, its PWR and SOLO latches, and its headline mode where it has one: SPECTRAL’s FREEZE (RUN / HOLD), GRANULAR’s SYNC (OFF / GRID) and TIME’s SHAPE GUARD (OFF / ON). SOLO auditions the station alone; it is never saved.
2WET · LVLWET is the focused station’s blend against its own input. The LVL strip beneath it is the station’s output level, −24 to +12 dB: a gain on the processed signal before the blend, which never drives the effect harder. Both live in the same place for all five stations.
3The wellThe seated group’s knobs, two or three at a time, with their values above and the group’s name below.
4Group ladderThe station’s named groups. Press a key to seat that group in the well. Every station’s first group is its performance group.
5SPLIT · CROSSSPLIT runs the rack as two parallel lanes; CROSS blends lane A against lane B. The CROSS column is dim until SPLIT is on.
6MacrosTHROTTLE, COLOR, GRAIN and DRIFT: four knobs that presets route to many controls at once.
7RANDOM · INITRANDOM randomises the focused station’s controls. INIT puts the focused station’s WET, mode segment and knobs back to their defaults and removes every modulation route in the patch; the station’s power and its LVL output level are left as they are. Both are ordinary undoable edits.

The groups, station by station:

StationGroups
SPECTRALREGION (PARTS · FOCUS · DIVERGE) · MOVE (SHIFT · SCATTER · TRANS) · TONE (TILT · BLUR · SMEAR) · FREEZE (TRACK · RATE)
GRANULARCLOUD (SIZE · DENSITY · POSITION) · PITCH (PITCH · SCATTER · SCALE) · FIELD (SPRAY · SPREAD · JITTER) · WINDOW (SHAPE · TILT · TRANS) · MOTION (REVERSE · HOLD · DIV)
MANGLEDRIVE (DRIVE · STAGES · SPLIT) · ARM + (SHAPE · ALG +) · ARM − (SHAPE − · ALG −)
TIMEREAD (RATE · POS · SCRUB) · SPLICE (SHAPE · WEAVE · WINDOW) · PITCH (PITCH · TIMBRE · TRACK) · GRID (SYNC · DIV · SWING) · REPEAT (REPEAT · REP DIV)
PLEATDRIVE (DRIVE · STAGES · SPLIT) · ARM + (FOLD · ALG +) · ARM − (FOLD − · ALG − · WIDE)

5 · MOD band

LFO 1 and ENV 1 in the MOD band

#ElementWhat it does
1Drag chipThe slot’s name. Drag it onto any knob to route the source there.
2ScopeThe LFO’s real waveform with a dot at its live phase. With CUSTOM selected, the sixteen points become drag handles.
3HZ / RATE · STR / DOT / TRIThe clock (free Hz or a tempo-synced division) and the synced feel (straight, dotted, triplet).
4RATEThe division, or the free rate in Hz.
5WaveformSINE, TRI, SAW, SQR, four drawn contours, or CUSTOM.
6SMOOTHSmoothing on the output, up to 250 ms.
7ENV chipThe envelope’s drag chip.
8GATE / TRIG / FOLLOWThe envelope’s mode.
9ATK · HOLD · DEC · SUS · RELThe AHDSR values. The scope’s nodes drag the same values. In GATE and TRIG they are segment lengths; in FOLLOW, ATK and REL are time constants (63 % of the way to the level in that time).

LFO 2 and ENV 2 repeat the same layout. The envelope’s source tap, gate threshold, tracking and sensitivity are held in the session and reachable from the host’s parameter list; the panel shows AHDSR and MODE.

MORPH · VECTOR fold-out

The MORPH page

#ElementWhat it does
1MORPH / VECTORThe panel’s two pages. The pad is the same on both; the rows beneath it change.
2PadThe morph position as a crosshair, the vector’s points and playhead, and the four corners A to D. Drag the crosshair to move the morph by hand; click empty space to place a vector point; click a point to select it and double-click to deselect it; drag a point to move it; alt-click or right-click a point to remove it.
3Scene chipsA to D. SET marks a stored scene; the selected chip is the one the verbs act on.
4MORPH DEPTHHow far the scene blend pulls the controls away from the stored patch.
5STORE · RECALL · CLEARSTORE writes the whole current patch into the selected scene (REPLACE when it is already set). RECALL moves the morph onto the selected scene at full depth. CLEAR empties it.

The VECTOR page

#ElementWhat it does
1MORPH / VECTORThe page tabs.
2PadThe path’s points and the travelling playhead. Two points make a path; below that the axes are inert and the panel says so.
3X · Y · PROG · LINKThree drag chips for the playhead’s position and progress, and LINK, which authors two ordinary routes (vector X to morph X, vector Y to morph Y) so the path drives the scenes.
4CLOCK · FEEL · MULTHZ or RATE; straight, dotted or triplet; and a ×1 to ×16 multiplier.
5RATE · MODE · VECThe traversal rate, the travel mode (LOOP, PING, ONCE, SCAT) and the travel depth.

LIBRARY

The LIBRARY fold-out

#ElementWhat it does
1BanksSYSTEM, the factory banks found on disk, and USER for your own presets.
2PresetsThe selected bank’s presets. SYSTEM holds one row, INIT: the patch a fresh insert opens on. Click a row to select it, LOAD to load it.
3NAME · SAVE · SAVE OVERSAVE writes the current patch to your preset folder under the name; SAVE OVER replaces the preset you loaded.
4LOAD · IMPORT · REVEAL · RESET BLANK · RESCAN · CLOSEIMPORT copies a .clgpreset file into your folder and loads it. REVEAL opens the folder. RESET BLANK returns the whole instrument to its neutral state: every control at its default, no routes, canonical order, every station off but SPECTRAL. RESCAN re-reads the folder.
5DETAIL stripWhat loading the selected row would do. After you press a verb — LOAD, SAVE, SAVE OVER, IMPORT, RESCAN, RESET BLANK — the strip carries that verb’s result instead, in amber, until you move the selection.

Presets live in Documents / COLLAGE Presets: factory banks under Factory/<bank>/, your saves in the folder itself. Loading a preset written by an earlier COLLAGE moves the instance onto that version’s frozen renderer and marks the preset field LEGACY.

CONTROL ROUTES inspector

The CONTROL ROUTES inspector

#ElementWhat it does
1Route listEvery route in the patch as SOURCE > destination. Click a row to select it.
2SOURCE · TOPickers for the route’s source (any family) and destination (any routable control, macro or trim).
3Combine · polarity · curveADD, MULTIPLY, REPLACE, MIN, MAX or SPAN; BIPOLAR, POSITIVE, NEGATIVE or INVERT; LINEAR, EXP, LOG or SMOOTH.
4DEPTH · MIN · MAX · SLEW · RESTDrag to change; Shift makes fine changes. REST reads AUTO when the source’s own neutral value is used.
5Status lineWhether the selected route is ACTIVE, and if not, why: a bypassed station, a macro with no audible target, an unavailable source.
6ON · NEW · ADD · REMOVE · CLOSEON bypasses or re-enables the selected route. NEW prepares a fresh route from the pickers; ADD commits it.

Guided tour

A TOUR tab on the window’s right edge slides out a shade listing thirteen stops: the preset console, UNDO, the master path, the instrument cluster, the signal corridor, ROUTES, MORPH, the station cards, the station controls, SPLIT and CROSS, the macros, RANDOM and INIT, and the MOD band. Pick a stop and the rest of the window dims while that region is outlined, with what it does and one thing to try. START TOUR, NEXT and BACK walk the stops in order; FINISH returns to the list. The shade moves to the left edge when the stop it shows sits on the right, the window stays playable while it is open, and the tour takes no keys. It is view state only: never saved in a preset, a scene or the session.

Parameters

133 live controls in COLLAGE 0.1.4. Mod marks a control that can be a modulation destination. Host parameter is the name a DAW’s automation list shows.

Master path (head band)

The five knobs in the head band read left to right in signal order: IN feeds the rack, then MIX, HP, LP and OUT follow it. Two more master settings are held in the session without a panel control.

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
INIn Trim−24.0 dB to +24.0 dB · default 0.0 dB●Gain applied before the rack. Every follower and analysis lane sees the trimmed signal.
MIXDry Wet Mix0 to 100 % · default 100 %—Master blend between the untouched input and the rack’s output. The dry side is delay-compensated, so 50 % is a true half-and-half.
HPOutput HPOFF, then 20 Hz to 2 kHz · default OFF●Output high-pass after the master blend, 12 dB per octave. The frequency shown is the filter’s −6 dB point (no resonance); the −3 dB corner is higher, at 1.55 times that frequency. At the bottom of its travel the filter is out of the path entirely.
LPOutput LP800 Hz to 20 kHz, then OFF · default OFF●Output low-pass after the high-pass, 12 dB per octave. The frequency shown is the filter’s −6 dB point (no resonance); the −3 dB corner is lower, at 0.64 times that frequency. At the top of its travel the filter is out of the path entirely.
OUTOut Trim−24.0 dB to +24.0 dB · default 0.0 dB●Final gain before the soft ceiling.
not on the panelSafetyOFF · ON · default ON—Arms the zero-latency soft ceiling that ends the path, a sample-peak limiter (not true-peak; inter-sample peaks can exceed it by several dB). On in every shipped session; the CEIL lamp in the head band’s cluster lights while the ceiling is reducing gain.
not on the panelCeiling−12.0 dBFS to 0.0 dBFS · default −0.3 dBFS—The sample-peak level the soft ceiling holds the output under. Peaks settle about 0.35 dB under it, and peaks between the samples can exceed it by several dB. Held in the session; presets do not change it.

Rack: SPLIT and CROSS

Rack order and each station’s power are structural state on the station cards; these two parameters are the split topology.

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
SPLIT (apron latch)SplitOFF · ON · default OFF—Runs the rack as two parallel lanes, A and B. With SPLIT on, every station card gains a LANE chip that moves that station between lanes, and the lanes are summed through CROSS. Reported latency does not change.
CROSS (apron knob)CrossA100 · B0 to A0 · B100 · default A50 · B50●The blend of the two lane outputs when SPLIT is on, from all lane A to all lane B. In a serial rack it does nothing.

SPECTRAL

Group ladder: REGION · MOVE · TONE · FREEZE. Mode segment: FREEZE (RUN / HOLD).

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
PWRSpectral EnableOFF · ON · default ON—Powers the station. Power is a 10 ms fade on a station that keeps running, so switching costs no click and the station’s history stays warm.
WETSpectral Mix0 to 100 % · default 50 %●Blend of the station’s output against its own input.
LVL (under WET)Spectral Wet Level−24.0 dB to +12.0 dB · default 0.0 dB●Output level of the station’s processed signal, applied before the WET blend; the dry side never passes through it. It balances the station against the rest of the rack without driving the effect harder. 0 dB is the original level.
FREEZE segment (RUN / HOLD)Spectral HoldRUN to HOLD; continuous under modulation · default RUN●Holds the spectrum that was sounding when HOLD engaged as a bed and blends it with the live signal. The segment switches between RUN and HOLD; as a modulation destination it is continuous, so a route can fade the held bed in and out.
PARTS (REGION)Parts0 to 100 % · default 65 %●How finely the spectrum is cut into regions before anything is moved: low values treat broad bands as one piece, high values give every partial its own region.
FOCUS (REGION)Focus0 to 100 % · default 0 %●Which regions HOLD keeps. At 0 the whole spectrum is held; at 100 % only the regions within 12 dB of the loudest one, so a chord can be held while quieter, moving material stays live.
DIVERGE (REGION)Diverge0 to 100 % · default 25 %●Displaces the right channel’s regions differently from the left, keeping the low end mono-coherent at every setting. It acts only while SCATTER is above 0.
SHIFT (MOVE)Shift−24 to +24 st · default 0.0 st●Moves every region up or down the spectrum. TRACK decides whether the move is musical or a fixed offset in Hz.
SCATTER (MOVE)Spectral Scattera bound of ±0 to ±12 st per region · default ±0.0 st●Displaces each region by its own random amount inside the bound the knob sets. The draws are seeded, so a bounce from any bar reproduces them. Low partials scatter progressively less toward the bottom of the spectrum rather than being cut off.
TRANS (MOVE)Spectral Transient0 to 100 % · default 65 %●Transient handling: on an onset COLLAGE re-anchors the sound and cuts the BLUR and SMEAR tails, so attacks arrive intact instead of smeared.
TILT (TONE)Spectral Tilt−100 to +100 % · default 0 %●A spectral slope of up to ±6 dB per octave, referenced to 1 kHz. An automatic energy compensation then rebalances the sound, so 1 kHz is not a fixed pivot: the 0 dB point sits wherever the material’s energy balances. On a flat spectrum, full positive TILT leaves 1 kHz about 12 dB down. Negative darkens, positive brightens.
BLUR (TONE)Diffuse0 to 100 % · default 0 %●Spreads energy across neighbouring frequencies; the spread widens progressively as the control rises.
SMEAR (TONE)Smear0 to 100 % · default 0 %●Temporal inertia: how slowly the spectrum’s magnitudes release, from instantaneous up to a 2-second time constant at full SMEAR. A time constant of 2 s means the level falls 8.7 dB every 2 s, so a held sound takes about 14 s to fall 60 dB. Transients still arrive intact at full SMEAR.
TRACK (FREEZE)Track0 to 100 % · default 100 %●How SHIFT moves the regions: at 100 % it transposes them, at 0 it adds the same offset in Hz to every region. The two agree at 440 Hz, so morphing TRACK is smooth.
RATE (FREEZE)Rate0 to 100 % · default 25 %●How fast the displacement field drifts. At 0 the SCATTER pattern is static; higher values keep it moving, and BLUR breathes with it.
not on the panelResolutionLIVE · FAST · MID · FINE · default FAST—The spectral analysis tier, and the one setting that decides the plugin’s latency: 435, 819, 1587 or 3123 samples at 44.1 or 48 kHz. Structural: held in the session, not automatable and not routable.

GRANULAR

Group ladder: CLOUD · PITCH · FIELD · WINDOW · MOTION. Mode segment: SYNC (OFF / GRID).

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
PWRGranular EnableOFF · ON · default OFF—Powers the station, as a click-free 10 ms fade. The station’s four seconds of input history keep filling while it is off.
WETWet0 to 100 % · default 50 %●Blend of the grain cloud against the station’s input.
LVL (under WET)Granular Wet Level−24.0 dB to +12.0 dB · default 0.0 dB●Output level of the station’s processed signal, applied before the WET blend; the dry side never passes through it. It balances the station against the rest of the rack without driving the effect harder. 0 dB is the original level.
SYNC segment (OFF / GRID)Granular SyncOFF · GRID · default OFF●GRID quantises each grain’s start to the DIV division of the host tempo; OFF spawns freely. Without a valid tempo GRID falls back to free spawning and the readout says FREE.
SIZE (CLOUD)Size5 ms to 500 ms · default 80 ms●Length of each grain.
DENSITY (CLOUD)Density0.25 to 32 overlapping grains · default 4.0●How many grains overlap at once. From about 2 overlapping grains upward the level is compensated, so DENSITY changes the texture rather than the loudness. Below that the cloud is sparse and is not compensated: it gets quieter as DENSITY falls, by up to about 12 dB at the bottom of the knob.
POSITION (CLOUD)Position0 to 100 % · default 0 %●Where in the last four seconds of input the grains read from: 0 is now, 100 % the oldest reach. A fresh insert at 100 % hears silence until four seconds have passed.
PITCH (PITCH)Pitch−24.0 st to +24.0 st · default 0.0 st●Transposes every grain.
SCATTER (PITCH)Granular Scatter0 to 100 % · default 0 %●A random pitch offset per grain, up to the amount set.
SCALE (PITCH)ScaleOFF · OCT · 5TH · MAJ · MIN · HARM · CHROM · default OFF●Quantises the scattered pitches to a scale: octaves, fifths, major, natural minor, harmonic minor or chromatic semitones.
SPRAY (FIELD)Spray0 to 100 % · default 20 %●A random read position per grain. The low end of the knob gives fine control, and the whole reachable window opens at 100 %.
SPREAD (FIELD)Spread0 to 100 % · default 35 %●Stereo placement of the grains, from identical channels at 0 to a fully spread field.
JITTER (FIELD)Jitter0 to 100 % · default 15 %●A random size variation per grain.
SHAPE (WINDOW)Shape0 to 100 % · default 0 %●The grain window’s flat top: 0 is a fully smooth window, 100 % holds each grain at full level for most of its length.
TILT (WINDOW)Granular Tilt−100 to +100 % · default 0 %●Skews the grain window: negative front-loads the attack, positive swells into the grain.
TRANS (WINDOW)Granular Transient0 to 100 % · default 25 %●Transient preservation. On an onset, grains are pulled toward the present and their windows front-loaded, so attacks keep their definition inside the cloud.
REVERSE (MOTION)Reverse0 to 100 % · default 0 %●The probability that a grain plays backwards.
HOLD (MOTION)Granular HoldLIVE · HOLD · default LIVE●Parks the input history so the cloud keeps reading the same four seconds while everything else stays playable. HOLD outranks a bypass. The corridor pane offers RELEASE HOLD; after an explicit transport stop a held cloud waits for fresh audio.
DIV (MOTION)Granular Division1/1 · 1/2 · 1/4 · 1/4T · 1/8 · 1/8T · 1/16 · 1/16T · 1/32 · default 1/16●The division GRID snaps grain starts to.
not on the panelRandomFREE · LOCK · STATIC · default LOCK—LOCK repeats exactly from any bar; FREE runs freely from the last reset; STATIC repeats one fixed choice. Structural: not automatable and not routable.

MANGLE

Group ladder: DRIVE · ARM + · ARM −.

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
PWRMangle EnableOFF · ON · default OFF—Powers the station, as a click-free 10 ms fade.
WETMangle Mix0 to 100 % · default 50 %●Blend of the shaped signal against the station’s input. Because the shaper is level-compensated, WET and LVL are where the station’s loudness is set.
LVL (under WET)Mangle Wet Level−24.0 dB to +12.0 dB · default 0.0 dB●Output level of the station’s processed signal, applied before the WET blend; the dry side never passes through it. It balances the station against the rest of the rack without driving the effect harder. 0 dB is the original level.
DRIVE (DRIVE)Mangle Drive1× to 8× input gain · default 35 %●Input gain into the transfer curve. Automatic level compensation returns the wet path to its dry level, so DRIVE changes the spectrum, not the loudness.
STAGES (DRIVE)Mangle Stages1 to 4 passes, continuous · default 1.0●How many times the waveform passes through the curve. Fractional stages crossfade smoothly and each stage’s shape scales automatically, so several gentle passes stay smoother than one hard one.
SPLIT (DRIVE)Mangle Split−100 to +100 % · default 0 %●Where the waveform is divided into its positive and negative arms, referenced to the signal’s own level. 0 is the zero crossing; the seam is hard.
SHAPE (ARM +)Mangle Shape +0 to 100 % · default 35 %●The positive arm’s character, from transparent to fully shaped. Above about 85 % QUANT becomes a musical gate.
ALG + (ARM +)Mangle Algo PosTHRU · SOFT · CLIP · DIODE · CHEBY · RECT · QUANT · default SOFT—The positive arm’s algorithm. A static selector: stepping it under modulation would be a discontinuity, so it is not a route destination.
SHAPE − (ARM −)Mangle Shape -0 to 100 % · default 35 %●The negative arm’s character, independent of the positive arm.
ALG − (ARM −)Mangle Algo NegTHRU · SOFT · CLIP · DIODE · CHEBY · RECT · QUANT · default SOFT—The negative arm’s algorithm. Two different algorithms compose an asymmetric curve.

TIME

Group ladder: READ · SPLICE · PITCH · GRID · REPEAT. Mode segment: SHAPE GUARD (OFF / ON).

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
PWRTime EnableOFF · ON · default OFF—Powers the station, as a click-free 10 ms fade.
WETTime Mix0 to 100 % · default 50 %●One blend of the whole station against its input. The read head, the transient shaping and the slices render their complete effect before this single mix.
LVL (under WET)Time Wet Level−24.0 dB to +12.0 dB · default 0.0 dB●Output level of the station’s processed signal, applied before the WET blend; the dry side never passes through it. It balances the station against the rest of the rack without driving the effect harder. 0 dB is the original level.
RATE (READ)Time RateFREEZE at the centre; up to 2.00× at either end, the left half in reverse · default 0.50× with SYNC at RATIO●Playback rate of the read head on a geometric taper: FREEZE at the centre, unity near the ends of each half, reverse on the left. With SYNC at RATIO it snaps to a ten-step ladder of musical ratios so a stretched phrase stays on the grid.
POS (READ)Time Pos0 to 100 % · default 0 %●The read position inside the WINDOW.
SCRUB (READ)Scrub ModeJUMP · TAPE · default JUMP—How a POS move is performed. JUMP relocates the read head; TAPE adds the move’s velocity to the pitch, so dragging sounds like pulling tape.
SHAPE (SPLICE)Time Shape−100 to +100 % · default 0 %●Transient shaping. The centre is exactly off; to the right the attacks PUNCH, to the left they SMEAR with onset dispersion.
SHAPE GUARD segment (OFF / ON)Time Shape GuardOFF · ON · default ON—Limits the transient gain that positive SHAPE (PUNCH) adds to 2× before WEAVE, so hard punch cannot slam the output safety stage. OFF restores the original 8× range; zero and negative SHAPE are unaffected. ON by default, also in sessions saved before it existed.
WEAVE (SPLICE)Time Weave0 to 100 % · default 0 %●The slice re-sequencer in one control, least destructive first: gating, then reordering, reverse from 35 %, stutter from 72 %. It starts after a quarter bar of enabled audio, fades in rather than pops, and at a longer DIV waits until it has a whole slice to play.
WINDOW (SPLICE)WindowFREE · 1/4 · 1/2 · 1 · 2 · 4 · default FREE●The span of live history the read head traverses: FREE, or a number of beats at the host tempo. A beat window is held between four grain lengths and the four-second history less one grain, so a long window cannot lock at a slow tempo: 4 beats lock only above about 62 BPM, 2 beats above about 31 and 1 beat above about 16 (RATE moves these slightly).
PITCH (PITCH)Time Pitch−24.0 st to +24.0 st · default 0.0 st●Transposes both the stretched read and the slices.
TIMBRE (PITCH)Timbre−12 to +12 st · default 0.0 st●A tilt corrector for the colour of a pitch shift: it corrects tilt, not formants.
TRACK (PITCH)Timbre TrackOFF · TRACK · default OFF—Ties TIMBRE to the opposite of PITCH, so a transposition is corrected without a second gesture. TIMBRE spans ±12 st while PITCH spans ±24 st, so beyond ±12 st of PITCH the correction stops growing.
SYNC (GRID)Time SyncFREE · RATIO · default RATIO—RATIO snaps RATE to musical ratios; FREE leaves it continuous. Not a route destination.
DIV (GRID)Time DivisionAUTO · 1/2 · 1/4 · 1/8 · 1/8T · 1/16 · 1/16T · 1/32 · default AUTO●The slice division WEAVE works on. AUTO lets WEAVE choose the division.
SWING (GRID)Swing−50 to +50 % · default 0 %●Shifts every second slice boundary.
REPEAT (REPEAT)RepeatOFF · ON · default OFF●Latches the newest division and repeats it. Ready after one division of audio, audible even with WEAVE at 0. As a route destination a synced LFO turns it into a rhythmic stutter.
REP DIV (REPEAT)Repeat Div1/2 · 1/4 · 1/8 · 1/8T · 1/16 · 1/16T · 1/32 · default 1/16●The division REPEAT holds.

PLEAT

Group ladder: DRIVE · ARM + · ARM −.

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
PWRPleat EnableOFF · ON · default OFF—Powers the station, as a click-free 10 ms fade.
WETPleat Mix0 to 100 % · default 50 %●Blend of the folded signal against the station’s input. The dry side keeps the low end; PLEAT reads best as seasoning below MANGLE’s level.
LVL (under WET)Pleat Wet Level−24.0 dB to +12.0 dB · default 0.0 dB●Output level of the station’s processed signal, applied before the WET blend; the dry side never passes through it. It balances the station against the rest of the rack without driving the effect harder. 0 dB is the original level.
DRIVE (DRIVE)Pleat Drive1× to 8× input gain · default 30 %●Input gain into the folder, level-compensated like MANGLE’s.
STAGES (DRIVE)Pleat Stages1 to 4 passes, continuous · default 1.0●How many times the waveform passes through the fold. Fractional stages crossfade.
SPLIT (DRIVE)Pleat Split−100 to +100 % · default 0 %●Where the waveform is divided into its two arms, referenced to level. The seam is smooth. With WIDE open, asymmetry here is also what makes the station stereo.
FOLD (ARM +)Pleat Fold +0 to 100 % · default 30 %●Fold depth of the positive arm.
ALG + (ARM +)Pleat Algo PosTHRU · MIRROR · SINE · CREASE · WRAP · LEDGE · STEP · default MIRROR—The positive arm’s fold algorithm. A static selector, not a route destination.
FOLD − (ARM −)Pleat Fold -0 to 100 % · default 30 %●Fold depth of the negative arm.
ALG − (ARM −)Pleat Algo NegTHRU · MIRROR · SINE · CREASE · WRAP · LEDGE · STEP · default SINE—The negative arm’s fold algorithm.
WIDE (ARM −)Pleat Wide0 to 100 % · default 100 %●Makes the right channel fold differently from the left. At 0 both channels fold identically; at 100 % the right channel folds differently, which widens the image while the mono sum keeps the odd-harmonic body. Disabled on a mono track.

Macros

Four performance knobs in the apron. Each is also a control source that presets route to many destinations, and a destination another source can drive.

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
THROTTLEThrottle0 to 100 % · default 0 %●How hard the rack is being driven. Rests at 0.
COLORColor0 to 100 % · default 50 %●The rack’s tonal centre of gravity. Rests at the centre.

ENV 1 and ENV 2 (MOD band)

The two envelope followers share one control set. The panel shows AHDSR and MODE; the tap, threshold, tracking and sensitivity live in the session and the host’s parameter list.

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
ATKEnv1 Attack1 ms to 500 ms · default 10 ms—Attack time. The five AHDSR values are also draggable as nodes on the slot’s scope. In FOLLOW mode ATK is a time constant, not a travel time: the envelope covers 63 % of the distance to a rising level in this time, and 99 % in about 4.6 times as long.
HOLDEnv1 Hold1 ms to 500 ms · default 20 ms—Hold time at the peak before the decay.
DECEnv1 Decay5 ms to 2 s · default 120 ms—Decay time from the peak to the sustain level.
SUSEnv1 Sustain0 to 100 % · default 50 %—Sustain level while the gate stays open.
RELEnv1 Release5 ms to 2 s · default 180 ms—Release time after the gate closes. In FOLLOW mode REL is a time constant, not a travel time: the envelope covers 63 % of the distance to a falling level in this time, and 99 % in about 4.6 times as long.
GATE / TRIG / FOLLOW segmentEnv 1 ModeGATE · TRIG · FOLLOW · default GATE—GATE holds the envelope open while the source is above threshold and releases when it falls 5 dB below; TRIG fires one AHDSR shot per transient; FOLLOW tracks the level with attack and release time constants (ATK rising, REL falling; 63 % of the way in that time), which is the honest choice for material that pumps.
not on the panelEnv 1 SourceIN · SC · WET · OUT · default IN—Which tap the envelope listens to: the trimmed input, the sidechain bus, the rack’s wet output or the final output. Set from the host’s parameter list or by a preset.
not on the panelEnv 1 Threshold−72 to 0 dBFS · default −38.0 dBFS●The gate’s open point; it closes 5 dB below. The default is −38 dBFS. Set from the host’s parameter list or by a preset.
not on the panelEnv 1 Tracking0 to 100 % · default 0 %—Auto-tracking: at 100 % the gate opens whenever the material is within 6 dB of its own recent average. 0, an absolute threshold, is the default.
not on the panelEnv 1 Sensitivity0 to 100 % · default 50 %●Retrigger sensitivity: how strong a transient must be to retrigger the attack while the gate is open.

Scenes and morph (MORPH page)

Four scenes, A to D, are stored patches; the morph pad blends them.

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
morph pad, horizontalReg X0 to 100 % · default 50 %●The morph position between the left scenes (A, C) and the right scenes (B, D). Drag the crosshair, or let VECTOR drive it through LINK.
morph pad, verticalReg Y0 to 100 % · default 50 %●The morph position between the top scenes (A, B) and the bottom scenes (C, D).
MORPH DEPTHReg Depth0 to 100 % · default 0 %●How far the scene blend pulls the controls away from the stored patch. At 0 the scenes are silent; RECALL moves the pad onto one scene at full depth.

VECTOR (VECTOR page)

An authored path of up to 16 points with a travelling playhead that publishes X, Y and PROG as control sources.

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
CLOCK segment (HZ / RATE)Path SyncHZ · RATE · default RATE—RATE locks one traversal of the path to the host tempo; HZ runs it free.
RATE knob, with RATE selectedPath Rate1/4 · 1/2 · 1 BAR · 2 BAR · 4 BAR · default 1 BAR—How long one traversal of the whole path takes. A bar is always four beats: COLLAGE does not read the host’s time signature.
RATE knob, with HZ selectedPath Hz0.02 to 20 Hz · default 0.5 Hz●The free-running traversal rate. Routable, so the path can speed itself up.
FEEL segment (STR / DOT / TRI)Path Rate ModSTR · DOT · TRI · default STR—Straight, dotted or triplet timing for the synced rate.
MULT segmentVector Multiplierx1 · x2 · x4 · x8 · x16 · default x1—Multiplies the traversal rate, so a 1/4-bar path can run at a sixty-fourth.
MODE segmentPath ModeLOOP · PING · ONCE · SCAT · default LOOP—LOOP travels the closed shape; PING runs it back and forth; ONCE runs it a single time and rests at the last point; SCAT jumps between the points in a seeded random order.
VEC knobPath Depth0 to 100 % · default 100 %●How far X and Y travel from the centre of the pad.

Global

ControlHost parameterRange · defaultModWhat it does
not on the panelSeed0 to 65535 · default 0—The one seed every random process derives from. Two sessions with the same seed and the same transport position make the same choices. Structural: held in the session, not automatable and not routable.

Control sources

27 control sources are live in COLLAGE 0.1.4. Domain is the range a source publishes and the point a route measures it from; with ADD or MULTIPLY, a route from a source sitting at that point leaves its destination exactly on the stored value. Under silence most analysis lanes publish 0 rather than 0.5 (see the note below the tables).

A note on the analysis lanes and in.noise. The “measured from 0.5” in the Domain column is the centre a route measures an analysis lane from, not what the lane publishes at silence. Under silence nine of the twelve analysis lanes publish 0: the three SPECTRAL lanes, GRANULAR’s level, both MANGLE lanes, TIME’s transient and envelope lanes and PLEAT’s fold activity. PLEAT’s split rests at 0.5, GRANULAR’s density rests at the level DENSITY sets, and TIME’s read phase is a free-running ramp. TIME’s transient and envelope lanes read the signal entering TIME, and SPECTRAL’s lanes analyse a mono sum, so a signal in antiphase between the channels reads as silence there. in.noise is a high-frequency-energy index, not a noisiness measure: white noise reads about 0.67, and a bright tone reads alike.

A note on macro.reassemble. The identifier is kept so that older sessions still resolve their routes. The control it reads is THROTTLE.

Route settings

Every route carries the same set of settings, whether it was made by dropping a chip on a knob or in the inspector.

SettingValuesMeaning
DEPTH−100 to +100 %How far the source moves the control. Negative depth inverts the excursion. A chip drop starts at a conservative depth over the middle of the control’s range.
MIN · MAXthe control’s own unitsThe span the source maps into. Drag the arc’s handles on the knob, or the rails in the inspector. ADD uses only the width of the span (half of it, times DEPTH, is the most it adds to the stored value), not its position.
CURVELINEAR · EXP · LOG · SMOOTHThe response between the source and the span.
POLARITYBIPOLAR · POSITIVE · NEGATIVE · INVERTWhich side of the source’s rest point is used. NEGATIVE is refused on a source that never goes below its rest (the envelopes, the input followers, THROTTLE).
COMBINEADD · MULTIPLY · REPLACE · MIN · MAX · SPANHow the route joins the stored value. ADD and MULTIPLY leave a resting control on its stored value; REPLACE, MIN, MAX and SPAN land a resting control on a deterministic value of their own, by design. ADD moves the stored value up and down by up to DEPTH times half the span’s width, wherever the span sits.
SLEWmsPer-route smoothing. A routed control bypasses the base smoother, so this is the only smoothing a routed control receives.
RESTAUTO or a valueWhere the source counts as at rest. AUTO uses the source’s registry baseline.

Routes are evaluated once per control tick, in the order they are listed. A macro destination is resolved first, so a route into a macro reaches everything that macro drives in the same step. A route into a control whose station is powered off, into a macro with no audible target, or from a source the session cannot provide is kept and shown inactive with its reason; it never draws a live-looking meter.

Terms

Station. One of the five processors: SPECTRAL, GRANULAR, MANGLE, TIME, PLEAT. Each has a power latch, a WET blend, an output LEVEL and a group ladder of controls.

LEVEL. A station’s output level, the LVL strip under WET: a gain on its processed signal before the WET blend, from −24 to +12 dB. It balances the station without driving the effect harder.

SHAPE GUARD. TIME’s mode switch. ON, the default, limits the transient gain positive SHAPE can add to 2×; OFF restores the original 8×.

Rack. The five stations in the order the cards show. Audio runs through them left to right, once.

Corridor. The window’s hero display: the stream drawn from IN to OUT with the focused station’s transformation on it.

Lane, SPLIT, CROSS. With SPLIT on, the rack runs as two parallel lanes, A and B; every station is on one of them and CROSS blends the two lane outputs.

Control plane. Everything that moves a control without being audio: the input followers, the two LFOs, the two envelope followers, the analysis lanes, the macros, the scenes and the vector. It observes the audio and emits numbers; nothing it emits is ever rendered.

Control clock. The engine’s own fixed-rate clock. Every source is read and every route applied on it, which is why a render is bit-identical at any host buffer size.

Route. One connection from a source to a destination, with depth, range, curve, polarity, combine mode and slew. A patch holds up to 128.

Source. Something a route reads: the 27 lanes listed above. Drag chips exist for the LFOs, the envelopes and the vector axes; every source is available in the inspector.

Destination. A control a route can move: 60 station controls (each station’s WET and LVL included), the four macros, the IN and OUT trims, MIX’s neighbours HP and LP, CROSS, the envelope thresholds and sensitivities, the morph position and depth, and the VECTOR’s HZ rate and VEC depth. Power latches, algorithm selectors, TIME’s three modes and the structural settings are never destinations.

Macro. One of THROTTLE, COLOR, GRAIN and DRIFT. A macro is a knob you turn, a source presets route from, and a destination another source can drive. A macro may not drive another macro.

Scene. One of four stored patches, A to D, blended by the morph pad. STORE, RECALL and CLEAR are the verbs.

Morph. The blend between scenes: a position on the pad and a depth.

Vector. An authored path of up to 16 points that a playhead travels, publishing X, Y and progress as sources. LINK ties X and Y to the morph position with two ordinary routes.

Follower. A control-rate measurement of a signal tap: the four input followers read the trimmed input; the envelopes read whichever tap they are set to.

Analysis lane. A control-rate measurement of a station as it processes, live whenever a route asks for it, even while that station is bypassed. Most lanes read the station’s output; TIME’s transient and envelope lanes read the signal entering TIME. Under silence nine of the twelve rest at 0, not at the 0.5 centre a route measures from.

Group ladder. The named groups of a station’s controls, seated in the well one at a time.

Well. The dark recess in the apron that holds the seated group’s knobs.

WET and MIX. WET is a station’s blend against its own input. MIX is the master blend of the whole rack against the dry signal.

PWR. A station’s power. A powered-off station passes audio unchanged, keeps its history warm, and still feeds any analysis lane a route demands.

SOLO. An audition override that plays the focused station alone. It changes nothing that is saved.

INIT, BLANK. INIT is the patch a fresh insert opens on: a gentle, obviously-COLLAGE patch with two stations on, fifteen routes, scenes and a linked vector. BLANK is the neutral instrument: every control at its default, no routes, canonical order. RESET BLANK in the LIBRARY reaches it.

Preset, bank. A .clgpreset file holds one whole patch: every parameter, the rack order and power, the routes, the scenes, the vector, the custom LFO tables and the seed. The factory content is 336 presets: INIT and sixteen themed banks.

Latency, PDC. The delay the plugin reports so the host can align it. It is set by the RESOLUTION tier alone and does not change when a station is bypassed, reordered, split or modulated.

Resolution tier. LIVE, FAST, MID or FINE: the SPECTRAL RESOLUTION tier, and with it the latency. FAST is the default.

Seed, LOCK. One number every random process derives from. Anything in LOCK mode keys its draws to the musical position, so a bounce from bar 33 matches the same bars of a pass from bar 1.

Structural setting. A setting the router, the automation layer, RANDOM and the morph all leave alone: RESOLUTION, SEED and GRANULAR’s RANDOM mode. Changing one is a session decision, not a performance gesture.

Legacy session. Every session ever saved still opens. A session saved by an earlier COLLAGE version opens in a compatibility mode and is marked LEGACY.

Sidechain. An optional input bus that feeds the envelope followers and nothing else. It never reaches the audio path.

Ceiling. The zero-latency soft limiter that ends the path, holding sample peaks under the session’s ceiling level. It is a sample-peak ceiling, not a true-peak limiter: peaks that fall between samples can exceed the ceiling level by several dB.

Trim. A plain gain: IN before the rack, OUT before the ceiling.
